Joomla still going strongish
What do you like best about the product?
Joomla is pretty easy compared to some cmses on the market. The ui organised and structured.
What do you dislike about the product?
Security the platform shows its age withstand number of security holes.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It allows us to organise content on the fly
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Consider security

Outdated, clunky but functional
What do you like best about the product?
The advanced ability to go into the code and edit any CSS on the pages. It is very well suited for a technical designer.
What do you dislike about the product?
Mostly everything. Not being able to upload files with spaces in the title, having to add an image to the library before uploading it on a page, complicated page nesting, etc. The dashboard is confusing for a first time user to say the least. It took me a few months to navigate comfortably in the menus. Perhaps there is too much 'customizeability' which makes not so user-friendly for a beginner.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
My company's website is controlled via Joomla CMS. It is very easy to change out features, text and other aspects of the website on the fly and have the changes be reflected immediately.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you have a technical background, you will find it easy to set up Joomla. If you are a beginner looking to just get a website up and running with pre-made options, go with either Drupal or Wordpress.
Joomla Learning Curve
What do you like best about the product?
I liked the way that Joomla is a CMS platform and makes less work of website and blog updates. It has more back end options for customizing than Word Press.
What do you dislike about the product?
I found their back-end administration very confusing. All the interface controls were in jargon speak known to only hard core users of Joomla. As far as their email capabilities I made a couple attempts to run a distribution from my database of subscribers to no avail. I could not find any online help to do this. Frustrating. There are less custom templates available. The one that do exist I found hard to implement.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I used this for a custom calendar printing website with a custom module. It worked well for a while until we experienced a hack and could never quite recover.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Unless you are a die hard geek, stay away
Powerful and very easy to use
What do you like best about the product?
Joomla makes it really easy for me to take control of my website maintenance and updates. I rarely need assistance because it is so intuitive and easy to use.
What do you dislike about the product?
Occasionally, the updates for some of my extensions aren't compatible with the latest version of Joomla, so I have to choose new extensions or fall behind, which is a security concern.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Using Joomla allows me to have control over my website without needing to call a web developer. In-house control saves money and time.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Setup can be a little tricky, and knowledge of CSS will allow you to modify the templates to fit your needs more closely. It is a very powerful product, but watch for compatibility between your extensions and your Joomla version.
Great CMS for extra functionality
What do you like best about the product?
The downloadable extensions, free and paid. You can make your site function exactly how you want it to with as little effort as you want.
What do you dislike about the product?
Troubleshooting problems or changing core files. It's easy with the forums but probably the hardest thing I have to do.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Joomla allows our two person department to seem like more. It also enables me, with limited code knowledge, to build a beautiful site with extra add-ons built by programmers.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Joomla can be used as is, or with some code knowledge, you can do a lot of enhancements and customization.
Great tool for building websites, very big repository of adding available
What do you like best about the product?
The flexibility in building websites and the large community that offers loads of add-ons for many purposes.
What do you dislike about the product?
Configuration of the service takes a while, and you have to get used to the options.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Build website easily, where you can fully focus on the front-end of the website.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Joomla offers a lot of flexibility, but you need to keep giving tech support to the end users to ensure that the configuration/updates are maintained.
Flexible, but not friendly
What do you like best about the product?
The joomla platform allows a web developer to do pretty much anything. It's got enough flexibility and add-ons to accommodate lots of styles. Text heavy, menu heavy, image heavy - it can handle it. You can customize everything according to your tastes. All that without much knowledge of coding beyond basic HTML 5 (although more certainly helps). It's pretty easy to create an initial (simple) website if you don't have a lot of put up.
An interesting function of joomla, is that it's mostly user-run. Once you purchase the platform and a template, all support is run off user forums. So there isn't an official support line, but among the various forums it's pretty easy to get some help.

What do you dislike about the product?
It's completely non-intuitive. If you know what you're doing and are joomla trained, it's probably an excellent platform. But trying to figure out how to do anything more than author the simple articles is really difficult to understand unless you've explicitly been trained on joomla. While the basic template is really easy to manipulate, beyond that is really difficult. For example, I was attempting to extend the maximum limit of images on a slideshow, and that simple extension took three steps - only one of which was intuitive.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
My company is a scientific research and biotech company that puts out all types of content: videos, articles, white papers, and images. Joomla's platform allows us to make the website HUGE, but relatively navigable. It definitely would be easier if the content were less linked and smaller in terms of content, but that applies to every platform, I suppose.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Definitely find a web developer who is specifically Joomla trained. It's important to know how to use the platform well in order to receive the best return. Because it is extremely technical, flexibility is high, but it is not friendly at all. I would not recommend trying to "figure it out" because you will inevitably end up creating a link-flow or process in a way that makes it really difficult to edit later (yes - speaking from experience).
Great way to start an online business
What do you like best about the product?
Joomla offers a great, full functional method of getting your website off of the ground with multiple integrations like shopping carts, emailing software and blog opportunities it's a big web-based software application that allows you the full opportunity to take your website to the very next level. Joomla is a well supported application that allows multiple apps/wigits to be running siultaneously on your website to allow your users a one-stop opportunity and to encourage them to return day after day after day.
What do you dislike about the product?
I like most aspects of Joomla.. It would be nice if they had an auto-update to the latest minor version enabled.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
None
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Virtuemart, Google analytics, facebook integration.
15 years using, everytime better
What do you like best about the product?
I developed from a single landing page (using JA page builder) to an entire University website including eCommerce. The versatility and flexibility to deploy customisations is a big thing in Joomla.
What do you dislike about the product?
Hope they don't repeat the big problems we had with the change from 1.5 to 3 through 2.5. Imposible to upgrade the v1.5 and v2.5 that we still have working with many problems. Hope that v3 lasts for many years or that they find a new way to upgrade,. Translations and image treatment could still be improved.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We solve intranets, landing pages and websites (all sizes). Easy maintenance, fast development, fits to all needs.
Full featured CMS
What do you like best about the product?
Joomla allows you to create virtually any web solution with the selection of the right components, modules and plugins. Once set up, Joomla is relatively simple for a layperson to manage.
What do you dislike about the product?
If not properly managed, vulnerabilities can make the site open to hackers. This is true of any website structure but seems to be more common when dealing with popular cms like Joomla.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are able to deliver turn key web solutions to our clients that can be managed inhouse if they choose. In most cases, the diverse availability of top shelf extensions eliminates the need for inhouse developers.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Visit Joomla.org to review the extensions directory and the support forum. Both are professional, useful and will become key tools in the success of your long term implementation. Joomla is the best choice when you are looking at a full featured development project that requires complex functionality.
